This is a grade 3 walking holiday where we can expect half and full days of walking with a maximum of 6 miles of walking a day. Some of the walking is in conjunction with the sightseeing programme in towns, cities and other sites of interest. Our half days will consist of 3 hours of walking whereas our full days will be up to 5 hours of walking. The paths are generally good with minimal ascents and descents. The more remote paths can become muddy and slippery after rainfall. As this holiday is heavily influenced by sightseeing, we will be taking a leisurely pace to allow us plenty of time to enjoy the places we visit. This is also a pioneer holiday as tourism is relevantly new in Vietnam. Alterations to hotel bookings, rescheduled or cancelled flights do sometimes occur and hence changes to the itinerary can take place without prior notice. Some aspects of the holiday may be more basic but the experience and stories to tell will be worth it.
Meticulously curated, guided walking holiday itineraries that delve into the culture, wildlife, cuisine, and rich history of the world.
Overview
Scratch just beneath the surface of this country and quickly discover how authentic Vietnam is; a potpourri of beautiful landscapes and vibrant cities, striking coastlines, sandy beaches, and welcoming locals. A Vietnam where ancient custom is harmoniously entwined with modern life, and where the street is still the heart of social gatherings.
Immerse yourself in the sights, sounds and smells of Vietnam. Colourful floating markets bob along turquoise rivers as exotic spices spill from woven baskets. The locals wash laundry alongside the riverbank and market squares buzz with shared gossip as the air is filled with aromatic dishes sizzling in hot woks.
Our Vietnam tours truly encapsulate the magic of this sacred country: the conservative north, the rich heritage of the imperial cities, stunning coastal scenery, and the vibrant life of Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon).
We’ll take an escorted tour of Ho Chi Minh City, with its beautiful French colonial buildings and vibrant neon streets, to visit the Reunification Palace, the General Post Office, and bustling street markets, before an authentic dinner in a local restaurant.
Then, we’ll visit the strategic Cu Chi tunnels, an elaborate network of underground dug-outs used by the Viet Cong in the Vietnam War. Deep in the jungle heartland, we’ll tour the ancient town of Hoi An, where we find the UNESCO site of My Son temple. We’ll learn traditional customs and values from welcoming locals as we share stories with Hoi An residents in their own homes.
We then travel over the breathtaking Hai Van Pass (of Top Gear fame) to the Imperial City of Hue for a voyage on the Perfume River. Relive the history of the Nguyen dynasty on a visit to the intricately carved stone tombs of Minh Mang and Khai Dinh.
We continue on to the capital city of Hanoi where we enjoy a full day of guided sightseeing around centuries-old architecture in the chaotic old quarter.
In Halong Bay, we’ll cruise on a traditional boat amongst the distinctive 3000 limestone islands and iconic floating stacks. Be sure to watch the sun rise over the bay from the deck for incredible views of this remarkable scenic phenomenon. We continue to Sapa for dramatic sceneries: towering ledged valleys, mirrored paddy fields, and soaring mountains on all sides. We will climb to the summit of Fanxipan Mountain, at 3147m, the highest mountain in Vietnam and the Indochina peninsula. Here we enjoy some magnificent walking in lush countryside, before returning to Hanoi.

The Vietnam Adventure is a great holiday experience but the country’s relative newness to tourism enforces us to apply a ‘Pioneer’ grade. Alterations to hotel bookings, rescheduled or cancelled flights do sometimes occur and hence changes to the itinerary can take place without prior notice.
Much of the walking is in conjunction with the sightseeing programme and this is in towns, cities and around other sites of interest. When separate walks are taken, the duration is no longer than around 2hrs.
Local Transport Costs
In the holiday cost, we've included all local transport expenses related to the advertised activity programme for your convenience. If there are additional visits or excursions to enrich your experience, you can choose to participate and cover the costs locally. Depending on the itinerary, local transport may involve a mix of private hire coaches, taxis, local buses, and ferries.
Optional Excursions
At your destination, you may have the option to book various local excursions and activities through a local operator. It's important to note that we are not involved in these activities or excursions, and we do not operate, supervise, or control them in any way. Your contract will be directly with the local activity supplier, and we bear no responsibility for their actions or omissions.
Holiday Budgeting
As you plan your holiday budget, it's essential to account for expenses such as drinks, meals not covered in the holiday price, entrance fees not included, optional local excursions, and any souvenirs or additional services like laundry. For a rough estimate, budgeting around £10-£20 per person per day for lunches and drinks is a helpful guideline.
Currency in Vietnam
The currency in Vietnam is the Dong. It can be ordered in the UK before you travel or obtained from ATM's locally.
Tipping
In your holiday price, we've included tipping for our local suppliers, covering hotel and restaurant staff, local guides, and drivers. Should you wish to make an extra contribution for a specific service, this should be given directly to the recipient at your discretion.
Tour Leaders
Your tour leader plays a crucial role in enhancing your holiday experience, and they share your passion for exploring the world on foot. In addition to being resourceful and organised they are also well-travelled and deeply enthusiastic about showing you new destinations. Your tour leader takes care of all the local administration, ensuring you can fully enjoy your holiday without worrying about the logistics. While leading group holidays, they always keep in mind that each group is composed of individuals. Each tour leader brings their unique style, talents, and professional background to the table. Rest assured, they are all trained, qualified, experienced, and dedicated to making your holiday as enjoyable, interesting, and inspiring as possible. Remember, your leader, while on holiday, is your first port of call for any issues, ensuring a smooth and worry-free experience for you.
Leader's Evening Briefing
Each evening, your tour leader will meet with you to review the programme for the next day. This is your chance to discuss details and ensure that the planned activities align with your walking ability. If you have any concerns about clothing or equipment, feel free to bring them up during this discussion. If, for any reason, you prefer not to participate in the organised group programme, please inform your leader. Your preferences are important, and your leader is there to make sure your experience aligns with your expectations.
Local Guides
To enhance your experience, as well as your tour leader, each holiday will be accompanied by a well qualified and knowledgeable English-speaking local guide.
We fly from London to Ho Chi Minh City returning from Hanoi.
Travel in Vietnam is by road and boat. Please note that the road system is not maintained to the same standard found in Europe, and occasionally detours or delays may occur due to blockages or road works. Even travelling short distances is likely to take considerably longer than you might expect.
If you are joining or leaving the holiday abroad we assume, unless you advise us otherwise, that you will meet the party at the first hotel and leave at the last hotel – please contact us before departure to confirm the hotel details! However, should you wish to join the holiday at Ho Chi Minh Airport or wish to make other alternative arrangements, please be sure to let us know in writing at least 5 weeks before departure.
The Vietnamese have introduced a law that says if seat belts are fitted on a coach the passengers must use the belt. Fines can be levied against the passenger not the driver of the bus.
Booking Your Own Travel Arrangements
If you prefer to arrange your own flights from a non-UK or regional airport or travel to your holiday destination by rail or car, you may qualify for 'land only' reductions, and we can provide details upon request. Feel free to reach out to us for more information.
Before finalizing any independent travel arrangements, especially if you're doing so 12 weeks or more before your intended travel date, please check with us first to ensure your holiday has been cleared to operate. If you plan to join your holiday locally, kindly inform us at least 14 weeks in advance.
If you're joining and leaving your holiday overseas, we assume, unless you specify otherwise, that you will join and leave the holiday at your hotel.
Although airport transfers are not included for those making independent travel arrangements, you may have the option to join the group at the overseas airport, depending on your flight arrival time. If interested, contact us at least 5 weeks before departure for more details.
Please be aware that your flight must arrive within 30 minutes of the group flight to be eligible for the group transfer. Additionally, we'll need your flight number, arrival time, and departure point to ensure the group leader can meet up with you. If you have a mobile, please ensure we have the number, and it is turned on while you are traveling for effective communication.
Hotel Transfers
When you book a Flight-Inclusive holiday, transfers between the airport and hotel and back are included. On some holidays, where we offer various flight options, the transfer vehicle may wait for all flights to land before transferring to the hotel.
Luggage Allowance & Travel Documents
If you're booking a flight or rail inclusive holiday, rest assured that details of your travel arrangements and baggage allowance will be clearly outlined in your 'Final Travel Documents'. These will be sent to you approximately 10 days before your departure, ensuring you have all the necessary information for a smooth and well-prepared journey.
Personal Details Check
To ensure the accurate administration of your holiday arrangements, kindly verify that the personal details we have for you are current and correct. Confirm that you've given us all the necessary information for securing your travel and accommodation. Please review your passport details, date of birth, and any other pertinent information crucial for the management of your holiday.
Additionally, please make us aware of any dietary allergies or intolerances you may have. Your well-being is important to us, and this information will help us make appropriate arrangements for your meals during the trip.
You can access and update the provided information or add missing details through the "Manage My Booking" feature on our website at www.rambleworldwide.co.uk. Alternatively, reach out to our Sales and Reservations team at +44 (0)1707 331133. Upon receiving your booking confirmation, promptly check the details. Your cooperation ensures a seamless and enjoyable holiday experience.
Visa
A passport is required and should be valid for at least six months after your return from the holiday. Your passport should ideally be kept in the hotel safety deposit boxes at all times. It is a good idea to carry photocopies of the personal details pages of your passport. Should you lose your passport, this may assist with the issue of replacement documents and your return to the UK.
As of August 2023 the Vietnamese goverment allows UK passport holders to travel to Vietnam for trips of up to 45 days. Whilst this rule is in place a visa will not be required for this holiday.
Should the situation change you can apply for an e-visa for entry into Vietnam. Please consult the following website:
Vietnam evisa - National portal on Immigration (xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn)
You will be required to load a passport photograph during the application process. Please make sure the photo you load is less than 1MB file size. Bigger files can cause issues. Also payment should be made with a debit card not a credit card.
Breakfast and dinners are included in the holiday price. We will take breakfasts at the hotels. Dinners will vary between hotels and local restaurants. The meals are a mixture of local Vietnamese and international cuisine. Local restaurants will allow us the opportunity to sample traditional and local food such as Banh Xeo. Seven lunches (as shown in the itinerary) are included in the holiday price and will be taken in local restaurants or as a boxed lunch. Other lunches are not included and are at your own expense. Please note the Vietnamese are not used to catering for vegetarians and although wholesome vegetarian meals will always be provided some may find the food uninspiring. Please see some of the hotel details below for further information. Please note that the water in the hotels is not drinkable but bottled water can be purchased everywhere.
The hotel(s) listed within this document are examples of standard only. Whilst we strive to deliver the hotel(s) listed within this Holiday Information Sheet, there will be times throughout the year when they change. You will be sent an accommodation list with air tickets about three weeks before departure. From time to time hotels will change near to departure and you will not be advised until after arriving into the destination. We always aim to provide a replacement of similar standard and location, although we cannot guarantee similar facilities such as pool or bar.
Footwear
Good quality waterproof walking shoes or trail shoes with a thick, moulded sole with a good tread and a low heel are likely to be all that is required for these holidays. If you are a frequent walker and are comfortable in good quality hiking sandals, these may be adequate for some walks. You can wear lightweight walking boots if you prefer.
Country Specific Kit
Luggage space is restricted on board the Halong Bay cruise boat, so it is not possible to take all bags with us. Our main bags will remain on the tour bus when we board the boat at Halong Bay. Please have an overnight bag for the boat. A day sack will be fine. We will be reunited with our luggage the next morning on landing.
Traveling Light
You should be able to lift and carry and handle your own luggage. At some hotels, the coach may have to stop some distance short of the hotel entrance. Also, within some of the hotels themselves, there may be some long walks between the rooms and entrance area which could include some steps.
Travel Documents Checklist
Documents and Information to take with you:
Electricity in Vietnam
The electricity supply is generally 220V at 60 Hz, although some hotels now operate on 110V, or both. Please check what supply is provided before plugging in any electrical device. Please note that any appliance set for 110V will almost immediately burn out if connected to a 220V supply. More information can be found at https://www.power-plugs-sockets.com/
Water To Go
Opting for filtered water from a reusable bottle with its built-in water filter, like the Water-to-go bottle available at www.watertogo.eu, is a sustainable alternative to single-use sealed water bottles. Simply refill it from any water source and contribute to saving the environment from disposable plastic bottles.
Exciting news: Water-to-go has introduced two new bottles to their collection. The Active bottle is designed to fit bike water bottle holders, and the Sugarcane bottle is an even more planet-friendly option. Crafted from fibrous cane, a by-product of liquid extraction, it undergoes a process to create plant-based plastic. Explore the details on the Water-to-Go website for this innovative new range.
As a token of appreciation for your commitment to the environment, we've secured an exclusive 15% discount with Water-to-Go for you. Visit www.watertogo.eu and use the code RWH17 during your order.
Note: If you're booked on a long-haul holiday departing after November 1, 2023, you'll receive a complimentary Water to Go bottle, sent to your home address 2 or 3 weeks before your holiday. Thank you for being a part of our sustainable journey!
