Northumberland’s unique collection of gardens is a real delight, together with the wonderful heritage coastline. We stay in the heart of Northumberland, a short drive from the Northumberland National Park, perfectly located for our explorations.
Northumberland is in the North East of England and is the most northerly of England’s counties. There is a variety of scenic landscapes; moorland, rolling hills, coastline and beaches, as well as small towns and villages full of character.
Natural Beauty in the North East
Northumberland, the birthplace of Britain’s most famous landscape architect Capability Brown, is a delight to any garden and flower enthusiast. Stroll through beautiful stately homes and their exceptional gardens.
In contrast, the vast open spaces in this county provide the finest fresh air, making it the perfect location to stop and breathe. With dramatic, rugged hills and wide sandy beaches, this area is truly glorious.
Our visit to Alnwick will be spent ambling around the incredible castle. You may also have some time to visit the popular Barter Books, where you can read in front of an open fire.
A Place to Rest Your Head
We stay in a country house hotel in a rural location near to the peaceful town of Morpeth. From here, most of our daily journeys will take less than 30 minutes, and we will make use of private coach transport to take us to the places we visit.
There are gentle walks included each day so you can take in the sights of Northumberland, as well as the heritage coastline. Your Adagio Leader will ask you to be in the right place at the right time, so all you need to do is relax and enjoy the scenery.

Our itinerary is expected to follow the daily schedule outlined below but please bear in mind that the order of the days may be amended, or walks substituted, due to weather conditions or changes beyond our control. Distances, ascent/descent and timings are all approximate and refer only to the countryside walking element of each day.
To fully enjoy the walking on this holiday you should be able to walk along uneven undulating paths at about 1½ to 2 miles per hour for distances of between 3 to 4½ miles with walks lasting up to 3 hours. When sightseeing is involved at the places visited, you can walk as much or as little as you wish.
Walks & Excursions
We use a mix of privately hired vehicles, taxis, and public transport which gives us some flexibility in our itinerary. We have a wonderful programme of walking, sightseeing and visits planned to let you fully experience the area along with opportunities to relax at our wonderful hotel and enjoy your surroundings.
Local transport costs, entrance fees and tips to local providers are included in your holiday price. You may wish to budget for any meals and drinks not included in the holiday arrangements, non-included entrance fees and any optional excursions you may choose to participate in locally. A general guideline for lunches and drinks is £10-£20 per person per day.
Local Transport Costs
All local transport costs in conjunction with the advertised activity programme are included in the holiday cost. There may be occasions where additional visits or excursions are added to enrich your experience, these will be paid for locally by you if you choose to participate. Local transport can be a mix of private hire coaches, taxis, local buses and ferries depending on the itinerary.
We include tips in the holiday cost and your Adagio Leader will take care of making sure tips are given to hotel and restaurant staff and to local guides and drivers. If you feel that someone has gone out of their way to make your holiday enjoyable or help you in anyway, please feel free to give a personal tip to the person should you wish. If you are having an independent lunch or other service not included in the holiday arrangements, tipping is at your own discretion.
We believe that the best things come in small packages, and our Adagio holidays prove just that. We limit our groups to a maximum of 18 persons, plus the Adagio Leader, so that everyone has the opportunity to mix, share their love of travel and return home with new friendships. Small groups also have less detrimental local impact, allows us to use public transport on some days, eat at small local restaurants and, we believe, offers a better experience.
An Adagio Leader will accompany you throughout the holiday. They are all experienced travellers with a love for exploring and will help capture the true essence of the destination with their stories, knowledge and insights. They are well-organised, pay great attention to detail and enjoy being with people. They are there to help make your holiday as enjoyable and stress free as possible.
Leaders Evening Briefing
Your Adagio Leader will discuss the programme for the following day with the group at each evening briefing. This will be your opportunity to find out more details and ensure the planned activities suit your walking ability. Also, if you have any questions or concerns on clothing or lunch arrangements, this can be discussed then. If you wish to opt out of the organised group programme, this is fine, just let your Leader know.
Getting to your Holiday
Check-in at the hotel is from 3:00pm. Our Adagio Leader will meet with you prior to your evening dinner for a group welcome meeting.
To reach the hotel by car:
Enjoy a scenic drive into Northumberland passing the famous Angel of the North at Gateshead travelling on the A1 northbound.
Heading southbound into Northumberland from Scotland, the A1 crosses the River Tweed.
From the west, take the A69 and A66 while the A19 links Northumberland with the Port of Tyne.
The hotel is located off the A697. The hotel website has good driving instructions if you type in the postcode you are travelling from.
Parking at The Linden Hall Hotel is free for guests and there is ample space.
To reach the hotel by rail:
The nearest railway station to your hotel is at Morpeth. Less than three hours from London Kings Cross will get you to Northumberland on the East Coast mainline. Connecting westbound services are run by Cross Country. Morpeth railway station is 11 miles from the hotel so we suggest you pre-book a taxi. Northumberland by air:
Flights land at Newcastle International Airport, a 25-minute drive from Morpeth. Further south, Durham Tees Valley International Airport is just over an hour’s drive south of Morpeth.
To reach the hotel by coach / bus:
The coach operator National Express allows travel to Newcastle and connect with regular local services from Newcastle to Morpeth. Timetables and routes can be found at http://jplanner.travelinenortheast.info.
Arriva bus is the public bus services operator and typical journey times from Newcastle to Morpeth are 30 minutes. A taxi will then need to be arranged from the bus station to the hotel.
Route planning to and from Longhorsley:
The AA and RAC both offer free and detailed on-line route planning facilities on their websites which may help you find the hotel.

The hamlet of Longhorsley is quiet with very few shops or amenities. The most notable feature of Longhorsley is the comfortable Linden Hall Hotel, set in 450 acres of tranquil countryside. A 30-minute drive south takes you to Newcastle however the nearest town is Morpeth, 10 minutes’ drive away, where you will find many shops.
We stay on a half board basis. Breakfasts and evening meals will be taken in the hotel restaurant. Lunches will be at your expense. The hotel can provide packed lunches at a cost of around £9.50 each or there will be opportunities to buy lunch at the places we visit each day.
Footwear & Kit List
Comfortable, broken in, walking boots or shoes with a good sole are recommended for this holiday. Walking shoes or other comfortable footwear will be suitable for sightseeing days.
General Kit List
We recommend you bring the following items with you:
- Lightweight walking boots with ankle support (you may prefer walking shoes if you have strong ankles)
- Waterproof jacket and trousers. It does rain sometimes!
- A sunhat, fleece and gloves… to cover all weather eventualities.
- Sun cream in the warmer months.
- A water bottle.
- A picnic knife, fork and spoon, as required.
- A simple basic first aid kit.
- A daypack to hold all the above.
- Your valid National Trust membership card if you have one (for entrance to Wallington).
Water To Go
