An Italian dictionary will probably translate ‘La Grassa’ as ‘The fat one’. Rather than a person or persons, Bologna’s nickname refers to the superb, world renowned produce that originates near by. Mortadella, Parma Ham, Balsamic Vinegar and Parmesan Cheese are the most well known, with Culatello di Zibello perhaps the most exclusive. We have plenty of time to discover the heritage of these fine products, walk in the Apennine hills and enjoy the historic cities of Parma, Modena, Ravenna and Bologna itself.

Aside from foodie delights Bologna is a beautiful city, its famous porticoed streets lead to medieval towers and ancient churches. From our central hotel there's time to explore the city on foot each evening.

Proposed Itinerary

Select Departure :
22 Oct 2017 7 nights London (Heathrow)

Day 1 We fly to Bologna and drive the short distance to the Hotel Orologio, located just off the main square within easy reach of all the sights.
Day 2 Our first day is spent in Bologna, a stately city renowned for its porticoed streets and fine shops. The city is home to Europe’s oldest university, famous towers, Mortadella sausage and much more.
Day 3 We spend the day exploring Parma city, with tastings of the local ham and cheese along the way.
Day 4 Sightseeing in Modena, home of Balsamic Vinegar and Ferrari. Unfairly overshadowed by Parma and Bologna, Modena is a beautiful city in its own right and deserving of our time here.
Day 5 We have a day in Ravenna, briefly the former capital of the western world after the fall of Roman rule. The mosaics in Basilica San Vitale are not to be missed.
Day 6 Today we explore the Apenine foothills. We plan to walk in the Parco Storico di Monte Sole to the south of Bologna. It has a real countryside feel to it and offers a lovely contrast to our city sightseeing.
Day 7 To finish we have a final day in and around Bologna. For a walk out of the city, the climb up to Santuario di Madonna de san Luca, connected to the city by the world’s longest portico, is a great choice.
Day 8 We have the short transfer back to Bologna Airport.
